About the Labyrinth

In the autumn of 2004, we decided to build a labyrinth having discovered and enjoyed walking a couple in England. Nick Brown designed and carefully measured it out and more than 10 tons of stone, earth and gravel were moved into place.

The Marnes labyrinth leads in with dark gravel and from the centre turns out with light stone, so you walk out lighter! 1000 iris have been planted with the darker colours on the edge and white in the middle to symbolise the illumination and peace of the centre. Unlike the rest of the gardens, the iris have not been named as we wish to encourage you NOT to think, but to allow the sea of colour to envelope you.

Labyrinths can be found all around the world and particularly around the Mediterranean. For more information on labyrinths visit: www.labyrinthsociety.org
